Question - How old must a student be to start a driver's education course?
Answer - A student must be at least 15 years old by the first day of class.
Question - Does every student need an instructional driving permit?
Answer - Yes
Question - How is a driver's permit obtained?
Answer - The student will need to pre-apply online (see the links page) at the DOL website. A permit number will be issued to you, please submit this permit number with your application. We will then submit your information to the DOL along with the starting date of the course you are enrolled in, which will give you a waiver for the written test. If the student is 15 years old you may then go to the DOL and get your permit as soon as 10 days prior to the start of class.
Question - What documentation do I need for the DOL?
Answer - A certified copy of your birth certificate, social security card, a parent or legal guardian, glasses if they will be worn for driving and $25.00
Question - What is a permit waiver?
Answer - If you are enrolled in a driving school, the school will electronically authorize a permit waiver for the student with the Department of Licensing's computer system. This waiver exempts you from taking the written test at the DOL in order to receive the driver's permit. The student will have to pass the written test before getting their license.
Question - How long will it take to complete the course?
Answer - The course takes between 6 and 8 weeks to complete, however that may not be true for all students.
Question - What if a scheduled class or drive lesson is missed?
Answer - Classroom time must be made up hour for hour and on the subject missed. A student may only make up 3 classes. Behind the wheel drives must also be made up, and if not cancelled within a timely manner there will be a $10.00 charge.
Question - Do you have a refund policy?
Answer - Yes, a refund may be given. Refunds will not be given for dropping the class after the initial 6 hours of class, suspension, expulsion, or failing the class for any reason.
Question - What is the next step, now that I have completed the driver's education course?
Answer - Once the student has reached the age of 16 and has had their permit for more than 6 months, they may take their certificate along with proof of ID, age and residence to the DOL Office. Have a parent or guardian sign the Parental Authorization Affidavit, pass a knowledge test, pass a driving test, pass a vision screening, and provide a social security number, or sign a declaration stating you don't have one.
